One story is that fur traders up and down the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers sang this folk song. One of the heroes is in love with the daughter of a Native American chief. Another setting is that the song was a sea shanty sung by sailors. Just a pretty old folk tune, been around since the mid-1800's, one that can hold an audience, especially if you set it up right. For men but could be adapted for women.
